The Enfant terrible of the South Korean Choreographer scene.

Eun-Me Ahn loves to buck the trend. So what suggests itself more than creating a piece about North Korean dances? In her country South Korea, something like that almost sounds like treason. Since Eun Me Ahn may not travel to North Korea personally, so she did research on the internet and in libraries, where she found footage of strictly choreographed military parades, energetic group dances and virtuoso acrobatics, ritual dances and village dances. For her piece NORTH KOREA DANCE, she copied, distorted and potentiated the material with her own imagination. Featuring glitzy costumes that remind one more of colourful revues and glamorous pop concerts than of a military regime, Eun Me Ahn’s spectacular interpretation of North Korean dances finds its way to the stage – fascinating and gaudy, critical of society and cheerful.
Eccentric, extroverted and provocative: EUN-ME AHN, is an exceptional phenomenon, not only in her native South Korea. Always working at the intersection of dance and society, she and her fantastic ensemble from Seoul create astounding, unique dance scenes. With her powerful works, she is celebrated as the Korean response to the art of Japanese butoh. She has won numerous prizes and was Artist in Residence at the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris in 2018 and 2019.
