As a child, Dana Michel often wrapped herself a yellow towel around her head to look blond and like the others. This memory feeds her autobiographically inspired solo Yellow Towel, in which the Canadian-Caribbean choreographer in a captivating, personal and liberating way plays with African-American stereotypes. Can she upend them and thus harness them for herself? As a master of transformation, Dana Michel creates ever new characters and figures before our eyes that elude unambiguous classification: between black and white, man and woman, silent and loquacious, agile and stiff. They debate, discuss, ponder, or mutter. A partially absurd, partially gloomy exorcism attempt to get rid of marginalizing labelling processes by oneself and others.
DANA MICHEL is a new, powerful voice in the international dance scene. In her unusual choreographies, she combines performance, improvisation, hip-hop, comedy, dub, and film studies with social positions. Her spectacular works have been won a number of prizes; in 2017 she received the Silver Lion for innovative dance at the Biennale di Venezia. Michel lives in Montreal and is associated artist of the dance company Par B.L.eux.
