Subtleties in the relationship between the space, the body and the time unfolding.
the dance current
Caught in repetition, caught in space and time: as an academically trained industrial designer and choreographer, Andrea Peña is interested in relentlessly recurring motion sequences of everyday life that are shaped by objects. In UNTITLED I, repetitive sequences relate human strengths and deeply rooted traumas, capitulation and reconstruction – and in the end also the resilience and vulnerability of the male body. In this intense solo performance, the dancer Francois Richard performs in a searching, daring and always self-assuring manner. On the empty stage, he appears both resilient and defenceless, driven by the inexorable, rhythmic sounds of Bobby Leon as it seems. From a female, inquisitive perspective, Peña questions the boundaries between virility and fragility, between efficacy and vulnerability, creating an evening filled with tension, beauty and unsettling energy
.
ANDREA PEÑA understands her choreographies, which are also staged in museums, as immersive installations. A key theme of her work is the relationship between physique and consciousness of the self. The dancer and choreographer, originally from Bogota, Colombia, founded her company ANDREA PEÑA AND ARTISTS (AP&A) in Montreal in 2014, after having worked as a dancer with numerous Canadian companies, including Ballet BC and Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal. Her company AP&A has already won numerous awards, among others, the Banff Arts Center Clifford Lee Choreography Award 2018 and the Hong Kong International Choreography Festival Award 2019.
